Beard transplant cost in India

Last updated 25 September 2026

A beard transplant moves hair, usually from the back of the scalp, into areas of the face where beard or moustache hair is thin, patchy or missing. In India it is usually priced as a package or by the graft. This guide gives our cost estimates, typical graft ranges for each part of the face, and what the procedure and recovery involve. It is general information, not medical advice. A qualified doctor who examines you should decide whether a transplant suits you and how many grafts you need.

What a beard transplant costs in India

Beard transplant prices are less often published than scalp prices, and many clinics sell them as packages. Our estimates are therefore based on thinner evidence than our scalp estimates, and the ranges are wide on purpose.

Our national estimate is ₹35 to ₹70 per graft, with a wider market range of about ₹30 to ₹120 per graft. Small jobs often cost more per graft, because many clinics have a minimum charge whatever the size of the session.

JobTypical grafts (indicative)Estimated total in India
Patchy fill, goatee or moustacheabout 300 to 1,000₹25,000 to ₹70,000
Fuller beard coverageabout 1,500 to 2,500₹55,000 to ₹1.75 lakh

These are estimates, not quotes, and they exclude GST. A beard transplant for cosmetic reasons is generally charged GST. Treatment to restore appearance after an injury, burns or a condition present from birth may be exempt. Ask the clinic whether its quote includes GST and at what rate.

The price you are quoted will also depend on:

  • the number of grafts and the areas to be covered
  • your city, since metro clinics generally charge more
  • how much of the work the surgeon does personally
  • whether medicines, follow-up visits and PRP sessions are included (PRP is often ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 per session)
  • whether a second session is likely to be needed

How many grafts a beard transplant needs

The number of grafts depends on the area, the density you want and your existing hair. A doctor will count and plan this with you. As a rough guide, a 2021 review in the Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery gives these figures:

AreaGrafts in the review (indicative)
Moustachearound 300 to 400 on each side
Goateearound 600 to 700
Sideburnsaround 200 on each side
Full beard where little or none growsaround 2,000 to 2,500

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) gives a similar picture: from a few hundred grafts to more than 2,000. Your own number may be lower or higher. Our how many grafts do I need guide explains how doctors estimate grafts in general.

How a beard transplant works

  1. Consultation. A doctor examines your face and scalp, checks the cause of the thin areas and discusses the shape you want. Hair loss caused by a condition such as alopecia areata needs a diagnosis and a doctor's view before any transplant is considered.
  2. Design. The doctor marks the beard lines. Natural-looking results depend on the angle and direction of each hair, because facial hair grows at a sharp angle to the skin.
  3. Local anaesthetic. The donor area and face are numbed. You stay awake.
  4. Taking grafts. Grafts are usually taken from the back of the scalp, where hair is closest in thickness and texture to beard hair. This can be done by FUE or FUT. For small jobs, grafts are sometimes taken from under the chin. The ISHRS says hair taken from the beard itself can only be harvested by FUE.
  5. Placing grafts. Mostly single-hair and two-hair grafts are placed into small openings at a sharp angle, following the direction of your natural growth.
  6. Aftercare. You go home the same day with instructions for cleaning, eating and medicines.

Who a beard transplant may suit

A beard transplant may be considered if you have:

  • a patchy or thin beard or moustache that has been stable for some time
  • gaps caused by scars from an injury, burns, surgery or past skin infection
  • hair loss in the beard area from a cause that has settled, where a doctor agrees surgery is reasonable

You also need a good donor area. If you have scalp hair loss, the doctor will weigh up whether donor hair is better saved for the scalp. The ISHRS notes that beard hair is resistant to the hormone DHT, so age is less of a concern for beard-to-beard work.

Recovery after a beard transplant

The face is hard to cover while it heals, so plan some time off. Your clinic's instructions come first. The 2021 review describes:

  • First few days: mild redness and slight swelling of the face, with small crusts around each graft. The review advises keeping the area moist for the first 5 days, and soft food on the first day or two.
  • About a week: the review says shaving can usually start from about the eighth day. Your clinic may give a different time.
  • 2 to 8 weeks: many transplanted hairs fall out. The AAD describes this shedding as normal after a hair transplant.
  • About 3 months: new growth can start to show.
  • Up to a year: the result continues to improve over about a year.

The review also warns that one session may not be enough, and some people need a second one to reach the density they want.

Risks and side effects

Possible problems include redness, swelling, crusting, bumpy skin, hairs growing in the wrong direction, poor growth, infection and ingrown hairs or small cysts. The donor area can scar, as with any transplant. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed. Our guide on whether a hair transplant is safe has more detail.

Before you book, ask for the doctor's name and registration number and check it on the Indian Medical Register. The ISHRS says any procedure that cuts the scalp is surgery and must be done by a licensed, trained doctor.

Questions

How much does a beard transplant cost in India?

We estimate ₹25,000 to ₹70,000 for a small job such as a moustache, goatee or patchy fill, and ₹55,000 to ₹1.75 lakh for fuller coverage, before GST. Evidence on beard prices is thin, so treat these as broad estimates. Only a clinic can give you a quote after examining you.

How many grafts do I need for a full beard?

It depends on your face, your existing hair and the density you want. One review gives around 2,000 to 2,500 grafts where little or no beard grows, while filling patches may need a few hundred. A doctor will estimate your number in person.

Is a beard transplant permanent?

Transplanted hair usually keeps the qualities of the area it came from, and scalp hair from the back of the head is less affected by pattern hair loss. But results vary, some grafts may not grow and no one can guarantee a result.

When can I shave after a beard transplant?

One review suggests shaving can usually start from about the eighth day, but surgeons give different instructions. The ISHRS says your surgeon will tell you when you can shave the donor and recipient areas. Follow your own clinic's advice.

When will I see results?

New growth often starts to show around 3 months after the procedure, after the early shedding. The result usually keeps improving for about a year. Some people need a second session to reach the density they want.
