Hair transplant cost per graft

Last updated 25 September 2026

Most clinics in India price a hair transplant per graft. Our estimate for standard FUE is ₹30 to ₹60 per graft. FUT (the strip method) usually costs less per graft, and DHI and sapphire FUE usually cost more. For a typical session of 2,000 to 2,500 FUE grafts, the estimated total is ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, before GST and extras.

These figures are estimates of general Indian market prices, last updated 25 September 2026. They are not a quote and not any clinic's price. Only a clinic can price your procedure, usually after it has examined you. See how we estimate costs.

Cost per graft by method

The typical band is where most published prices in India cluster. The wider range shows the spread you will meet in the market, from promotional offers at the low end to premium positioning at the top.

MethodTypical estimateWider market range
FUE (follicular unit extraction)₹30 to ₹60 per graft₹20 to ₹100 per graft
FUT (strip method)₹20 to ₹40 per graft₹15 to ₹60 per graft
DHI (implanter pen)₹50 to ₹100 per graft₹40 to ₹150 per graft
Sapphire FUE₹40 to ₹80 per graft₹30 to ₹120 per graft
Beard transplant₹35 to ₹70 per graft₹30 to ₹120 per graft
Body-hair transplant (added to a scalp session)₹50 to ₹100 per graft₹40 to ₹150 per graft

A few points explain the order. FUT removes a strip of skin and divides it into grafts, which is faster per graft, so it is usually the lowest price. FUE removes each graft one by one. DHI and sapphire FUE are variations of FUE that use different tools for the implanting or the incisions, and clinics charge a premium for them. Clinics also use the name "DHI" loosely, so ask exactly what a DHI quote covers. Our FUE vs FUT guide explains the methods themselves.

If your graft count falls between two rows, for example 1,800 or 2,800 grafts, expect a total between the two neighbouring rows.

Sessions of 4,000 grafts or more are often split over two days, sold as a package, or priced case by case. Treat that row as the widest and least certain.

How the total is worked out

The basic sum is simple: the price per graft multiplied by the number of grafts. Three things make real quotes less tidy.

Large sessions cost less per graft. Published package prices in India show the effective price per graft falling as the session grows. Our estimates reflect this. Up to 2,500 grafts we use the full per-graft band. For 3,000 to 3,500 grafts we reduce it by about 15%, and for 4,000 to 5,000 grafts by about 30%. That is why the 4,000 to 5,000 row is not simply double the 2,000 to 2,500 row.

The graft count is a range until the day of surgery. A doctor estimates the number of grafts at consultation, but the final count depends on what can be safely taken from your donor area. Some clinics bill for the grafts actually placed, and others fix a package price for a range. Ask which applies to you.

A graft is not a hair. A graft is a follicular unit, a natural group of usually one to four hairs. A study of 580 Indian men found an average of about 1.8 hairs per follicular unit on the scalp. So 2,000 grafts means roughly 3,600 hairs, not 2,000. If a quote is given per hair rather than per graft, the numbers are not comparable.

Your graft count is the biggest single driver of cost. Our guide on how many grafts you need explains how doctors plan it.

What a quote usually includes, and what it leaves out

Inclusions vary a lot between clinics, so read the quote line by line.

Usually included:

  • the surgical session: taking the grafts, placing them, local anaesthesia and consumables
  • often a post-operative kit or first medicines
  • often a few follow-up visits in the first months

Often charged separately:

  • consultation or scalp examination (sometimes free, or adjusted against surgery)
  • blood tests before surgery
  • medicines and care products after surgery
  • PRP sessions, estimated at ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 per session where they are sold as an add-on
  • a second session or top-up, if you need one later
  • travel and stay if you come from another city
  • GST

GST is generally charged; ask the clinic. Hair transplant for cosmetic reasons does not count as exempt health care under GST law, so GST is generally charged on it. Treatment to restore appearance after an injury, burns or a condition present from birth may be treated differently. Ask whether the price you are given includes GST and at what rate. Our estimates exclude it.

Why two quotes for the same graft count differ

  • Method. FUT, standard FUE, sapphire FUE and DHI are priced differently, as the tables show.
  • Who does which steps. Prices differ depending on how much of the extraction and implanting the doctor does personally and how much a trained team does. This is a pricing difference, not a verdict on quality.
  • Clinic type. Single-doctor clinics, hospital departments and multi-city chains price differently.
  • City. Our estimates run slightly higher in large metros, higher again in Mumbai, and slightly lower in tier-2 and smaller cities. See the India cost overview for how cities compare.
  • Package or per-graft pricing. "Unlimited graft" or fixed packages change the effective price per graft.
  • What is bundled. PRP, medicines and follow-ups inside a package make it look dearer than a bare per-graft price.

City estimates

Our city pages apply the same method with a local adjustment and list clinics in that city:

How to compare quotes fairly

  1. Get the proposed graft count and method in writing, not just a total.
  2. Divide the total by the graft count to see the effective price per graft.
  3. Check whether the price is per graft placed or a fixed package for a range.
  4. List what is included: tests, medicines, PRP, follow-ups, a second day if needed.
  5. Ask whether GST is included.
  6. Ask who will do each step of the surgery, and confirm the doctor's registration.

A very low per-graft price is worth a closer look. Promotional offers exist, but a low headline price can hide extras, a smaller graft count than you expected, or a team working with little involvement from the doctor.

Questions

How much is 3,000 hair grafts in India?

Our estimate for a 3,000 to 3,500 graft FUE session is ₹75,000 to ₹1.8 lakh, excluding GST. FUT is usually lower at ₹50,000 to ₹1.2 lakh, and DHI higher at ₹1.3 to ₹3 lakh. Prices in Mumbai and other large metros tend to run higher than the national estimate.

How much hair is 5,000 grafts?

Each graft holds a small natural group of hairs, usually one to four. In one study of Indian men the scalp average was about 1.8 hairs per graft, so 5,000 grafts is very roughly 9,000 hairs. Whether 5,000 grafts can be taken safely from your donor area, and whether in one session or two, is something only a doctor can judge after examining you.

Is 1 graft equal to 1 hair?

No. A graft is a follicular unit, which usually contains one to four hairs. Clinics normally price per graft. If you are quoted per hair, ask for the graft count so you can compare like with like.

Does the cost per graft go down for more grafts?

Usually, yes. Published package prices show a lower effective price per graft for large sessions, and our estimates for 3,000 grafts and above reflect that. Very large sessions are often priced as packages, so the per-graft figure becomes less meaningful.

Does the per-graft price include GST?

Often not. GST is generally charged on cosmetic hair transplants; ask the clinic whether your quote includes it and at what rate. Our estimates exclude GST.

Why do some clinics advertise very low prices per graft?

Some are genuine promotions, and some cover only part of the cost. Check the graft count, what is included, and who performs each step of the surgery before comparing a low offer with other quotes.

How we estimate these costs

Figures are estimates built from prices clinics publish on their own websites, market price statements and published cost guides. They are not quotes and not the price of any clinic listed on this site. Read how we estimate costs.
