Hair transplant cost by grade
Last updated 27 September 2026
Your grade on the Norwood scale gives a first idea of what a hair transplant may cost. Here are our estimates for a first session at each grade in India. Only a doctor who examines you can set your own plan.

FUE takes grafts one at a time and is what most clinics in India offer. FUT takes a strip of skin and costs less per graft: ₹20 to ₹40 per graft, against ₹30 to ₹60 per graft for FUE.
Grade 2 and grade 3: the hairline
At these grades the loss is at the temples and the front, and the hairline is where the design matters most. Ask who draws it and how high it will sit, so it still suits you in 20 years. If you are young, see the right age for a hair transplant.
Grade 4 and grade 5: front, mid-scalp and sometimes the crown
Many doctors restore the front first and treat the crown later, if donor hair allows. The top of each range in the table allows for some crown work.
So when you compare quotes, check whether each one includes the crown. Two quotes for grade 5 can differ a lot for that reason alone.
Grade 6 and grade 7: the donor area sets the limit
At these grades the bald area can be larger than your donor hair can cover. Indian dermatology guidelines advise caution at grades 6 and 7 when donor density is poor. See why donor supply is the real limit.
Doctors usually plan for the front first and accept lighter coverage behind it. Some add grafts from the beard or body; see body hair transplant. Sessions of 4,000 grafts or more are often split over two days or priced case by case, and a second session may follow a year later. See second hair transplant.
Why two people at the same grade pay different amounts
- Donor hair. Thick, dense donor hair covers more with fewer grafts.
- Method. We estimate sapphire FUE at ₹40 to ₹80 per graft and DHI at ₹50 to ₹100 per graft, against ₹30 to ₹60 per graft for standard FUE.
- City. Our estimates are higher in Mumbai, a little higher in other metros and a little lower in tier-2 cities. See the India overview.
- What is included. GST, medicines, blood tests and PRP are often extra.

Questions
What is the hair transplant cost for grade 3?
We estimate ₹30,000 to ₹95,000 by FUE for a first session at grade 3 in India, before GST.
What is the hair transplant cost for grade 4?
We estimate ₹50,000 to ₹1.55 lakh by FUE, before GST. The top of the range includes some crown work.
What is the hair transplant cost for grade 5?
We estimate ₹60,000 to ₹1.7 lakh by FUE and ₹40,000 to ₹1.1 lakh by FUT, before GST.
What is the hair transplant cost for grade 6?
We estimate ₹70,000 to ₹1.75 lakh by FUE for a first session, before GST. Your donor hair decides how much of the area can be covered.
Can grade 7 be treated with a hair transplant?
Often the front can be improved, but full coverage may not be possible, because donor hair is limited. A hair system is the other option to compare. See hair transplant or hair patch.
Does the cost include GST?
No. Our estimates exclude GST, which is generally charged on cosmetic hair transplants. Ask each clinic whether its quote includes it.
