Hair transplant cost in India

A hair transplant in India is usually priced per graft, so the number of grafts you need matters more than anything else. For standard FUE, the most common method, we estimate ₹30 to ₹60 per graft in most of India. That puts a typical 2,000 to 2,500 graft session at about ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh before GST.

Prices vary widely between clinics and cities. Some advertise very low "starting from" prices, and some charge far more for premium techniques or premium clinics. The ranges on this page show where most published prices fall, so you can judge whether a quote is in the usual range and ask the right questions.

What a hair transplant is

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves hair from an area where it grows well, usually the back and sides of the scalp, to an area that is thin or bald. It is mainly used for pattern hair loss, the common inherited type. It works because hair from the donor area usually keeps its own characteristics after it is moved.

Hair grows in natural groups of one to four hairs called follicular units. Each unit moved is called a graft. There are two main ways to take grafts: - [FUE](/fue-hair-transplant) removes units one at a time with a tiny punch. It is the most common method. - [FUT](/fut-hair-transplant) removes a thin strip of skin and divides it into grafts. It leaves a line scar and is usually cheaper per graft.

Two popular variants of FUE change how the grafts go in. [DHI](/dhi-hair-transplant) places grafts with an implanter pen, and [sapphire FUE](/sapphire-fue) makes the openings with sapphire blades. Transplants are also used for beards and, in suitable cases, for women.

The procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic in one day. New hair usually starts to appear after about 4 months, and the full result can take 10 to 18 months to show.

What drives the cost

• Number of grafts. The biggest factor, because most clinics charge per graft. Very large sessions often cost less per graft.
• Method. FUT is usually the lowest per graft, then standard FUE. Sapphire FUE and DHI usually cost more.
• Who does the work. Prices differ with how much of the procedure the surgeon does personally and how much trained technicians do.
• Clinic type. Single-doctor clinics, hospital departments and multi-city chains price differently.
• City. Metro clinics, and Mumbai clinics in particular, generally charge more.
• What is included. Tests, medicines, follow-up visits and PRP sessions (often ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 per session) may or may not be in the price.
• GST. Our estimates exclude it. Ask whether a quote includes it.

How many grafts you need

The number of grafts depends on how much hair you have lost, the area to be covered, the density you want and how much donor hair you have. A small area such as the hairline needs far fewer grafts than the whole top of the head, and large areas are sometimes treated over two days or two procedures. Your donor hair is limited, so a careful doctor also plans for possible future loss.
